Portrait of the city
Aachen lies in a virtual valley, surrounded by fields, woods and hills. Approaching the town, you may not see an imposing skyline, but nature's greenery makes you feel heartily welcome. The town is a real pleasure for the pedestrian and, at its portals - closeby where three countries, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium - meet, you find the nature reserves of the Ardennes and the Eifel. Its warm water springs have been enjoyed for more than two thousand years! From Roman times, there have been good connections with the rest of Europe. Today, the town is reachable by motorways from Cologne and Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris. Via the airports of Maastricht/Aachen, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Brussels, or by fast train from Cologne/Düsseldorf, Brussels, Paris/London.
Aachen turns apparent contradictions into a sparkling entity. A metropolis nestling in natural surroundings, with a southern germanic atmosphere, an historic tradition and all the allure of modern living.

World equestrian festival CHIO
The world Equestrian Festival CHIO takes place a few days after Compumag (July 3-8). This international sport event is just as symbolic of the city as Emperor Charles the Great, printen biscuits, or the football players of the Alemannia Aachen team. It is indeed the international equestrian elite, who compete in the show-jumping dressage and driving competitions at the show grounds of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein (ALRV) every year. There were over 336,000 spectators in 2005, including the crowned and uncrowned heads of the high society: Kings and Presidents, church delegates, international sport and media celebrities as well as the stars of show business. In 2005 the show grounds were completely renovated and put into shape for the fifth FEI World Equestrian Games in seven disciplines (jumping, dressage, driving, eventing, endurance, vaulting and reining), which took place in the summer 2006, for the first time in Germany, and for the first time with all competitions organised within walking distance. About 800 riders and their horses competed for 16 gold medals; 576.000 spectators visited Aachen while 1,6 billion people worldwide were glued to their televisions. More information about the CHIO Aachen can be found here.
